Al Loving
Untitled, 1994 (Paint and Cardboard Collage, 12 x 25 Feet)1
This fascinating collage painting is an outstanding representation of Al Loving's later work in paint and collage, a style he termed material abstraction. Loving was one of the foremost African-American artists working in the abstract expressionist style. In the late 1980s, Loving joined the faculty at the City University of New York.2

- Al Loving's Artist Statement at the Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University - There is perhaps no better way to understand how an artist sees his or her own work than through the artist statement. The 1988 artist statement at the Castellani Art Museum website is notable for York College because Loving explains how his own work was influenced by work by Sam Gilliam, another artist whose work appears on the York College campus.
