Ernest Garthwaite
Shoshone Spirit Marsh (1993)
Ernest Garthwaite, Professor Emeritus of Fine Arts, was a member of the York College faculty from 1968 to 2003.
Numerous works of Garthwaite's art can be found in the Academic Core Building.
The most visible of Garthwaite's pieces are the four pencil drawings of the exterior of the Academic Core located in the B-wing of the library.
Also readily accessible to the interested visitor are the small scale landscapes from Garthwaite's Landscape Icon Series.
Shoshone Spirit Marsh (right), Mohegan, and Siwanoy Marsh Winter, apparently painted with support from a 1992 CUNY Research Grant, can be viewed in the Asian Reading Room of the library.
The three selections from the Landscape Icons Series represent Garthwaite's interest in Native Americans' land stewardship ethics, and his incorporation of gold leaf into his art.
